Review: Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage 2006

Heaven Hill is a giant producer of Bourbon. When we visited last year they had just finished “The Evans Williams Experience”, which was the newest addition to The Kentucky Bourbon Trail at the time. It was like a fun house for Bourbon. We ended up going there and Heaven Hill later that week. It’s kinda crazy that they have two places to visit on the trail. Powerhouse.

Heaven Hill puts out this Single Barrel Vintage every year. They eventually switch over to the next year sometime in the late fall, and this has been ongoing for close to 20 years.

This bottle was barreled on 7-12-06, barrel no. 179, and bottled on 5-08-15.

Company: Heaven Hill

Distillery: Old Evan Williams Distillery

Location: Bardstown, KY

Mash Bill: 75% corn/13% rye/12% barley

Age: 8 years, 9 months, 27 days

ABV: 43.3% (86.6 proof)

Released: Annual release, ongoing

Price: $20

Color: Golden Amber Lady

Nose: Vanilla, ginger snap cookie, green apple, has a bit of ethanol, light caramel/ butterscotch.

Taste: Bitter green apple with a bit of caramel, light brown sugar, vanilla, and light oakiness and corn. Tastes a little young.

Finish: Short burst of a finish, little heat that sticks around for a moment, dry finish. Leaves you wanting more.

Overall: This is a really great Bourbon for the price. It’s pretty easy to drink, decently balanced with a heated finish. This is not a very sweet Bourbon, but it could be a good transition for you lighter Bourbon lovers. Plus, you could definitely afford to try it. Hopefully I’ll let you know how 2007 compares!  Easy to drink, great price, it’s a keeper! Bonus, it’s kinda fun thinking that it’ll be slightly different next year!

Rating: 3.5/5

  1. Just picked up the 2007 vintage and it is 8.4 years old.and mediocre to say the least. That spectacular nose of earlier vintages in gone in this one. Very disappointed.
