When we visited Colorado last fall for our “beercation” we stopped in on a few distilleries to see what Colorado had going on. Feisty Spirits is in Fort Collins and after a few breweries on our bikes we decided to go check them out. We tried lots of things from this promising distillery including this Feisty Bier Schnapps.
Feisty Bier Schnapps is a distilled spirit made by distilling beer, Feisty’s 3rd release in this series. The beer used for this batch was made from a sour beer from Black Bottle Brewery. It can’t be called a whiskey because beer may have ingredients (like hops) that are not allowed in whiskey. It was bottled on May 26th, 2015.

ABV: 40% ( 80 proof)
Released: Limited.

Nose: Slightly sour, vanilla, oak, slight ethanol, hops, grass, it smells like beer that’s been distilled which makes me want to say “well, duh!” It’s really crazy to smell distilled beer and it smells exactly like you think that would smell. Like, a weird blend of whiskey and beer.??
Taste: Umm, yum. Slightly sweet vanilla caramel, but very light and slightly bitter. You can definitely taste the beer this was distilled from. I do wish it was a bit more full bodied, the mouthfeel is a bit thin.
Finish: Very light finish, not a lot of heat, just leaves you a little warm, and leaves a slightly bitter chocolate favor.
Overall: I think more distilleries should do this, I know there are a few out there who do, but yum. Supposedly, Black Bottle didn’t like the way this sour beer turned out, so this is a great idea.I think it’s genius, especially for the beer and whiskey lover out there, like us. Best of both worlds!
