Alright, it’s been a while since I had an oatmeal stout, it’s usually a style I can get behind. I didn’t start a bender with this over bacon and eggs, but I can use my imagination.
Company: Dead Armadillo Craft Brewing
Location: Tulsa, OK
ABV: 5.82% ABV
Style/Description: Coffee Oatmeal Stout
Price: $9 (22 oz. bottle)
Appearance: Deep, dark ruby brown pour, very low head and slight lacing.
Nose: Aroma is a strong scent of freshly ground coffee, milk chocolate, sugar cookies. Roasted grains and sweet sugar.
Taste: Bitter roasted espresso dominates this brew, with healthy doses of dark chocolate, caramel and vanilla. The coffee is dark and thick like a French press. Sweet and creamy mouthfeel, though it is a little thin. This clocks in at 5.82% ABV, it could perhaps benefit from an extra point or two. The carbonation is pretty low. Not that I want my oatmeal stouts fizzy, but the carb is low enough that it affects the mouthfeel.
Finish: The coffee lingers on the palette, though finishes pretty cleanly for a dark beer. Some grainy malts and sugary sweetness.
Overall: I like a good coffee stout, and a good oatmeal stout as well. An enjoyable effort from Dead Armadillo, though maybe a little uninspiring. Pick up a bottle for your next brunch with friends. You’ll feel less like an alcoholic drinking in the morning, because this beer has oatmeal and coffee in it!
