Here at Barrels and Mash we are always looking to try new things, especially if beer, booze, and/or food are in the picture. So, we were thrilled when the folks behind Booze Dogs, premium liquor infused bratwursts, reached out to us and offered to let us take their wieners for a spin.
There are currently three varieties of Booze Dog: Gin, Rum, and Bourbon, and the company was kind enough to send some of each so we could taste the whole product line. I paired them up a few accompaniments such as Bourbon BBQ, pineapple relish, and homemade beer cheese to bring out different aspects of what I was expecting.
Kate and I had our friend Jeff over for beers and brats so the three of us could offer our opinions of each flavor, and here’s how it turned out:

Bourbon Bluetick Brats
This was definitely the most expected of the three as Bourbon has become such a common “flavor” these days appearing in things like soap, BBQ sauce, maple syrup, and a ton of other products. In the case of the Booze Dogs, the Bourbon brats showcased the typical notes you would expect including some light vanilla sweetness and a bit of dry oak. The smoke pairs well with that profile although there was just a touch of boozy astringency. The texture was nice while being the least firm of the three and we found the Bourbon BBQ sauce and beer cheese to be the best accompaniments.
This was Jeff’s favorite of the three.
Jolly Rover Rum Brats
I was looking forward to these as Rum seemed to be a delicious choice to pair with smoked meat. The first thing all three of us noted was how boozy this flavor was with the rum sweetness being very present. That sweetness did nice things but there was a fairly strong cinnamon vibe that threw me off a bit. While the cinnamon was a bit out of place I kept going back to this one to figure it out.
This flavor was the big winner for Kate.
Prime Gin-ister Brat
Ok I have to admit that when I saw “brats infused with Gin” I thought it sounded like a terrible idea. For that reason we were all hesitant to try this one but to our surprise all three of us thought it was delicious. This one was somewhat dry which was a good break from the sweeter Bourbon and Rum varieties, and had some solid floral and apple vibes too it which was super interesting and very tasty. The pineapple salsa tasted awesome on these too.
This one was my favorite and I’ll probably be buying a pack of them very soon.
Pretty interesting results, each of us preferred a different flavor which I think speaks to the overall quality of Booze Dogs. You can buy a sampler pack like we had here, which you should because what can possibly be better than booze and brats!? Once you try them, let us know what you think and if you agree or disagree with our thoughts.
Booze dogs are the best!!! How did it take until 2018 for this to become a thing?
